A Minnesota couple is accused of torturing a girl at their home, and a camera they installed in her room captured extensive evidence of the abuse, news outlets report.
The couple were arrested Dec. 19 on charges of child torture, Itasca County jail records show.
An investigation into the couple, who are 27 and 24 years old, began after child protective services were contacted about a bruise on the girl's arm, and she told police her father was responsible, KBJR reported, citing court documents.
McClatchy News is not naming the couple to protect the identity of the child.
Investigators went to the couple's Grand Rapids home and discovered a camera in the girl's bedroom, the outlet reported.
The basement room was empty save for a mattress, a blanket, moldy food and a television, KFGO reported.
She spent most of her time in this bare space, "confined to her room, often from the time school ends until the time she goes to school the next day," investigators said, the outlet reported.
Video captured by the Google Nest camera showed the girl playing with an empty McDonald's box, the closest thing she had to a toy, KFGO reported.
That's not all the camera saw.
Investigators say video shows physical abuse, including the girl being hit, kicked and stepped on, as well as emotional abuse, with the couple hurling insults and once telling her "I'm going to kill you," KSTP reported.
At one point, investigators said the girl's father hit her nearly 100 times in the space of a single day, according to the station.
Bail without condition was set at $160,000 for the father and at $200,000 for his wife, the outlet reported. Their next hearing is set for Dec. 26.
Grand Rapids has a population of about 11,000 people and is a roughly 170-mile drive north from Minneapolis.
