'THESE WEREN'T ORIGINALLY PLANNED, BUT YOU HAD SAVINGS'

The long running project to renovate and expand the Washington County Virginia Courthouse has sparked some savings that will now be used to complete additional work.

Construction crews have been on the site for about three years and and the project has generated a savings of about $352,000 on the $30 million project, according to Washington County Administrator Jason Berry.

Of that savings, the Washington County Board of Supervisors has now earmarked $31,000 for a paving project outside the court-house. More money from that savings is slated for replacing shutters and painting the cupola outside the courthouse. Adding these changes still gives the project a $220,000 surplus, Berry said during last month's meeting of the Washington County Board of Supervisors.

"These weren't originally planned, but you had savings," Berry said. "And we're going to fix everything we can fix if the board wants to approve."

Supervisor, Wayne Stevens made the motion to make the changes, seconded by supervisor Charlie Hargis.

Last Friday, board Chairman Mike Rush said he expects the courthouse project to be wrapped up as early as February.

"Already open, will have an official ceremony in spring," Berry said Friday. "Last work is on outside. We came in under budget and ahead of time."
