LAKE GEORGE -- Two teenagers were charged with stealing a pickup truck and driving it down state Route 9 Friday morning, only being stopped after deputies managed to puncture its tires, according to the Warren County Sheriff's Office.
A patrol officer first saw the blue Ford F-150 around 10:40 a.m. driving south on Route 9 just past Diamond Point Road, according to a news release from the sheriff's office Friday. It matched the description of a truck reported stolen Thursday by the Washington County Sheriff's Office. When the officer ran the plates, they matched.
The truck refused to stop and tried to hit another officer as he laid down spike strips near Hubble Lane, the release said. The officer managed to puncture both right-side tires with the strips, and the truck eventually pulled into a parking lot on Canada Street.
A request to notify the nearby Lake George Central School District to go into lockdown was made, but cancelled in a matter of minutes, Lt. Russ Lail said in an email Saturday.
A 15-year-old accused of driving the truck was charged with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property and second-degree attempted assault, both felonies, second-degree reckless endangerment and third-degree unlawful fleeing, both misdemeanors, as well as multiple traffic violations. A 17-year-old with them was also charged with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property and had a warrant out of Albany County, the release said. Both were scheduled to be arraigned Friday afternoon in Warren County Family Court.
