First Human Case of the Bird Flu Reported in Iowa

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services has reported the first human case of the bird flu in the state.

The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that the first human case of the bird flu was reported in an individual who was working with infected poultry in a commercial flock in northwest Iowa. The case was identified through testing at the State Hygienic Laboratory and then confirmed by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Gazette reports that as of last Friday, the CDC has confirmed 64 human cases of the bird flu in nine states. Most became ill after exposure to infected poultry or dairy cows. The CDC has stressed that there is no evidence of any human-to-human transmission of the avian flu happening in the United States. The spread of the bird flu has increased in Iowa flocks in recent weeks. The Gazette reports that the state has reported eight flocks, totaling over 6.8 million birds, where the flu has been confirmed.

The Gazette reports that the virus is spread to humans after prolonged contact with infected flocks and herds. Any individual with direct contact who then develops flu-like symptoms should see a doctor immediately. The Gazette reports that the Iowan infected with the bird flu showed 'mild symptoms', has received treatment, and is recovering.
