Clock Operator Ignites Chaos With Improper Stoppage That Nearly Costs Florida State ACC Road Win

The Florida State basketball team escaped with a road win over Wake Forest in ACC action on Wednesday. The final moments of that contest proved to be controversial.

The Seminoles inexcusably fouled a Demon Deacons shooter at halfcourt while up by three points. Wake Forest had a chance to tie, but missed two of its three foul shots to lose, 72-70.

The final series was chaotic. Trailing by two with less than 20 seconds left in regulation, Florida State sank a three-pointer to take its first lead of the second half. Wake Forest then missed a quick shot, leading to a transition dunk on the other end.

FSU had a chance to simply run out the clock. Instead, they took the easy basket.

That gave the Demon Deacons one last chance to tie at the buzzer. Cameron Hildreth heaved a halfcourt prayer, which was answered in the form of a shooting foul.

The debate on whether to foul or play defense when up by three points in the final moments resurfaces every season. A foul, if done correctly, ensures the opposing team can't tie the game. Of course, it can easily backfire as seen in this instance.

Hildreth would be unable to tie the game after missing free throws. There are now questions about the final shot.

It appeared the clock paused momentarily with 7.6 seconds left. There was no reason for it to do so. The operator was potentially anticipating a foul and wanted to act as quickly as possible to save time. Still, there weren't any Demon Deacons in the area when the stoppage occurred.

The extra time allowed the chaotic scene to play out, which later gave the home team a chance to force overtime. Luckily, it wouldn't come back to bite the Seminoles.
