Alzheimer's research presentation kicks off caregiver series

Home Healthcare, Hospice and Community Services (HCS) is hosting an informational series for family caregivers during November and December.

The first in the series is titled "Advancing the Science at Any Given Moment: The Latest in Alzheimer's and Dementia Research," presented by Susan Antkowiak, Vice President of Programs and Services, Alzheimer's Association MA/NH Chapter. The presentation will take place on Thursday, Nov. 7, from 4 to 5 p.m. at HCS, 312 Marlboro St., Keene.

Antkowiak will discuss the landscape for Alzheimer's and dementia science, risk factors for Alzheimer's, highlights in early detection and diagnosis and the latest advances in clinical trials and treatments and lifestyle interventions. The program is free and open to the public.

The Caregiver Series will continue on Thursday, Dec. 5, with Sue Simonds, manager of Diluzio Foley and Fletcher Funeral Homes, discussing the changing times in funeral arrangements and green burials. Susan Abert, Certified Elder Law Attorney, will discuss common legal issues on Thursday, Dec. 12. These presentations will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. at HCS, 312 Marlboro St., Keene. All programs are free.

"Families get together over the holidays and concerns about older family members come up," said Susan Ashworth, HCS Director of Community Relations. "Family gatherings are good times to have conversations with older relatives, and this series is designed to help with those conversations."

The series is cosponsored by Home Healthcare, Hospice and Community Services and the Keene Senior Center. For more information, call HCS at 603-352-2253.
