Missouri women lose at Alabama | Jefferson City News-Tribune

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The Alabama Crimson Tide ended the first quarter on a 9-0 run and never trailed again Sunday afternoon, defeating the Missouri Tigers 68-49 in Southeastern Conference women's basketball action at Coleman Coliseum.

The first quarter featured three ties and three lead changes. Angelique Ngalakulondi made a layup and Nyah Wilson added another layup about a minute later, giving Missouri its largest lead of the game at 11-6.

Alabama, ranked No. 19 in last week's AP Top 25, dominated the rest of the first quarter. Aaliyah Lee knocked down a 3-pointer, Jeanna Cunningham converted a three-point play and Aaliyah Nye added another 3 for the 9-0 run to give the Crimson Tide a 15-11 advantage after one quarter.

Missouri never got any closer than four points of the lead in the final 30 minutes. Christabel Ezumah made a pair of free throws late in the second quarter, making the score 30-20, and Alabama led by double digits the rest of the game.

The Crimson Tide led 32-20 at halftime and 50-31 through three quarters. A layup by Lee gave Alabama its largest lead at 64-34 midway through the third quarter.

Missouri ended the game on a 15-4 run, shooting 7-of-8 at the free-throw line in that stretch.

Zaay Green scored a game-high 23 points for Alabama (15-1, 2-0 SEC). Nye added 11 points and Essence Cody also reached double figures with 10 points.

Nobody scored in double figures for the Tigers, who only had two fast-break points and two second-chance points. Ngalakulondi had nine points and a game-high eight rebounds, while Wilson also scored nine points off the bench.

Missouri (11-6, 0-2) continues SEC play Thursday at Georgia (8-8, 0-2), which is coming off a 73-57 road loss Sunday at Florida. Tip-off is at 5 p.m.
