ESPN loudmouth blasts ex-Jets QB who made first Pro-Bowl in bogus rant

Former Jets first-rounder Sam Darnold has become one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, but ESPN host Stephen A. Smith still isn't a believer.

In a panel that included Molly Qerim, Booger McFarland, and Chris Russo on Thursday's episode of "First Take," Smith downplayed Darnold's resurgent season with the Minnesota Vikings while using a bogus claim to back it up.

"The man hasn't thrown for 300 yards since November 24th against Chicago," Smith said, via Awful Announcing. "Let's not act like this is the second coming of Dan Marino."

Here's the problem: Darnold has thrown for 300 yards since November 24 -- twice.

He did it as recently as this past Sunday in the Vikings' 25-21 win over the Packers, where he threw for 377 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. He also did it in Week 14 against the Atlanta Falcons on December 8, where he threw for 347 yards and five touchdowns.

Darnold has established himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL this season. In his first season with the Vikings, the 27-year-old is 343 for 504 passing, a 68.1 completion percentage with 35 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

The 27-year-old quarterback's season has even garnered a 2025 Pro-Bowl selection, the first of Darnold's career.

Darnold's performance has helped Minnesota reach a 14-2 record, which is tied with the Detroit Lions for the best record in the NFC, ahead of the 13-3 Philadelphia Eagles.

Darnold, who is a free agent at the end of the season, will be one of the most highly sought-after quarterbacks ahead of next season with teams like the Giants potentially seeking his services.
