Eastern Connecticut preparing for first major snowfall

HEBRON, Conn. (WFSB) - It's the first major snowfall of the winter.

"Getting snow shovels, ice melt. This weekend will be a big push for it," said Bryan Hoffman, Owner, Hebron Ace Hardware.

The rush at Hebron Ace Hardware usually starts 24 to 48 hours before the snow starts.

"I'm always ready for snow. I love snow," said Mel Johnson, Columbia.

Mel Johnson has plenty of snow experience under his belt.

When asked what type of snow is the easiest for him to clear, he said, "With a Bobcat, it's all easy. You're just having fun."

Over at the Hebron Town Garage, crews spent the day loading up their trucks.

There are eleven routes covering 110 miles.

"Today, we are prepping our trucks, checking engine oil, making sure everything is running, windows are cleaned, they can see out of the mirrors. It's all safety stuff right now," said Darren Norton, Town of Hebron Foreman.

Steve Van Cedarfield has been the behind the wheel of a plow for years.

"If people could keep their cars off the roads for us for plowing, that would be great. The usual stuff, don't ride our bumpers, stay back for safety," Cedarfield said.

Winter has been lackluster lately, much to the chagrin of the Burgio family.

"I like to build a snowman!" said J.P. Burgio.

"We make snowmen, yes, but throwing snowballs, we have some fun throwing snowballs," said Peter Burgio.

For those town plow drivers, now that everything is loaded and checked, the next step is to get some good rest.
