Corning woman arrested on welfare fraud charges

CORNING, N.Y. (WETM) -- A Corning woman is facing multiple charges related to welfare fraud after allegedly receiving nearly $2,800 that she wasn't eligible for.

Investigators from the Steuben County Sheriff's Office arrested Nicollette M. Bennett, 33, on Oct. 24. According to the sheriff's office, Bennett gave a false instrument for filing to the Steuben County Department of Social Services when applying for benefits between March 1 and July 31. Authorities say Bennett received $2,795 that she wasn't entitled to from the department because of the false information she presented.

Bennett was charged with first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, fourth-degree welfare fraud, and fourth-degree grand larceny. All of these charges are class E felonies.

After she was processed, Bennett was released on an appearance ticket. She will appear in the Village of Bath Court at a later date.

The Steuben County Department of Social Services Fraud and Legal Affairs Unit and the Steuben County District Attorney's Office assisted the Steuben County Sheriff's Office with the investigation that led to Bennett's arrest.
