AP Issues Apology to Babyface After Disrespectful Grammy Red Carpet Moment

The Associated Press (AP) is facing backlash for an awkward and disrespectful moment involving R&B legend Babyface at the 2024 Grammy Awards. While speaking with the outlet on the red carpet, the "Whip Appeal" singer was abruptly cut off mid-interview so that reporter Krysta Fauria could instead bring in Chappell Roan. The move was widely criticized as dismissive and disrespectful to a Black music icon, leading AP to issue a formal apology.

In response to the backlash, AP publicly apologized for how the situation played out.

"We are deeply sorry for cutting our interview with Babyface short on our YouTube livestream of the Grammys red carpet. We have apologized to him through his representative and to our viewers on the livestream," AP said in a statement.

The apology came after fans took to social media, calling out the outlet for its lack of respect toward Babyface, a 12-time Grammy winner and one of the most legendary songwriters and producers in music history. Many argued that cutting off his interview in favor of a newer pop artist showed a lack of awareness and respect for Black artists who have paved the way.

Krysta Fauria, the AP reporter responsible for the moment, also took the time to personally address the situation while still on the red carpet.

"I wanted to say that I'm really sorry about interrupting Babyface earlier. Chappell Roan had come up, and there was a lot of commotion, as there is on these carpets. But I'm a big Babyface fan, as are we all. And so I just wanted to say that, that I really apologize."

While some viewers appreciated her quick response, others felt the explanation fell flat. Many pointed out that Grammy red carpets are always chaotic, but that Black artists -- especially veterans like Babyface -- deserve the same level of respect as newer artists.

Despite the controversy, Babyface kept it cool and unbothered, choosing to focus on the positive aspects of the night rather than the drama.

"The best part of the night was reconnecting with old friends, meeting new artists, and feeling all the love in the room," he said in a statement sent to USA TODAY by his representative, Ernest Dukes.

"That's what I'll remember. That's what it's really about. Music is bigger than any one moment. Much love to everyone who won and everyone out here making great music."

Fans praised him for his grace and professionalism, proving once again why he's a legend in the industry.

While AP's apology was necessary, this situation highlights a larger issue in the entertainment industry -- the treatment of Black artists and music legends. Babyface has spent decades shaping the music industry, writing and producing for some of the biggest names, yet was still pushed aside for a newer artist.

This isn't the first time a Black legend has been disrespected at a major event, and it likely won't be the last. But moments like this serve as a reminder that respect should be given, not just to the latest trending stars, but to those who have built the foundation for today's music industry.

AP's apology to Babyface after the Grammy red carpet snub was a necessary step, but it also served as a reminder of ongoing issues in the music industry. Respect for Black music legends should be automatic, not an afterthought.
