A police lieutenant in Connecticut died this morning with his family by his side, authorities said.

Plainville police announced that Lt. John Quilter passed away on Saturday, Jan. 18. Authorities did not say how he died or how old he was.

"Words cannot express how heartbreaking and devastating this loss is to his family, PPD, Plainville, and all of the lives that John touched." Plainfield police said in a Facebook post. "He was truly one of the best and his loss will be felt deeply."

Plainville police escorted his body to Plainville Funeral Home.
