Dune: Prophecy Season 1 has come to an end and left viewers with several questions as the twists that unraveled set up the spin-off series for a sophomore season. The Season 2 announcement came days before the finale aired, and now, with all the revelations that came to light, theories are being thrown left and right as to where the story will go from here. The series is a spin-off of Denis Villeneuve's cinematic triumphs Dune and Dune: Part Two, and it takes place over 10,000 years before the birth of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet). The series follows the origins of the Bene Gesserit, known as the Sisterhood during this time, and their political influences over the Imperium that suit their agenda. The storyline primarily focuses on the Harkonnen's rise to power and how the disdain between them and the Atreides came to be. However, there was an enemy that overshadowed that hatred as he threatened everything the Sisterhood had been working toward.

Valya Harkonnen (Emily Watson) and Tula Harkonnen (Olivia Williams) had to reckon with harrowing truths from their past to face the foe that challenges the Sisterhood's existence. Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel), a soldier who survived the dangers of Arrakis, breaks the Sisterhood's influence over Emperor Javicco Corrino (Mark Strong) and possesses a power that remains a mystery to the Valya and Tula. The web of lies begins to unravel as Valya plays a desperate hand to free Princess Ynez (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina) and, unwillingly, Keiran Atreides (Chris Mason). After discovering the extent of the Sisterhood's manipulation, Corrino takes his own life as Tula and Valya confront Desmond. The end of Season 1 shows Valya, Ynez, and Keiran arriving in Arrakis to uncover the truth behind the enemy controlling Desmond. There's a lot to unpack from that Season 1 finale and how it will lead into Season 2.

3.5 /5 Dune: Prophecy Sci-FiAdventureFantasyDrama

Release Date November 17, 2024 Main Genre Sci-Fi Seasons 1

As viewers will remember, Sister Lila (Chloe Lea), a young acolyte, underwent the Agony, a dangerous ritual where a Sister is required to drink the Water of Life, or poison from a baby sandworm, and transmute the poison within her body. The ritual was successful, and her ancestors gained control over her body, resulting in open communication with Mother Superior Raquella and Sister Dorotea. Dorotea gains control over Lila's body in the finale, and the memory of her death starts to come back to her, which will create more problems for Valya. She warns the other Sisters against Valya's teachings and her plans to control the Imperium through the genetic breeding program, which requires the utilization of a Thinking Machine, an outlawed form of technology.

Dorotea was always against the program started by Raquella and destroyed the machine. She makes her way around the compound and ends up where her murder took place. She reveals that Valya and Tula aren't what they appear to be and that the Sisters are a means to an end for them. Their care for them goes so far, and Dorotea manages to get through, and an insurrection against Valya and Tula is underway, which means Dune: Prophecy Season 2 will show them losing favor with the Sisterhood now that half of the Reverend Mothers are dead. It's also difficult to say how long Dorotea will have control over Lila's body before another ancestor like Raquella takes her place, in which case Dorotea's efforts would be in vain.

Who Will Be the Next Ruler of the Imperium in 'Dune: Prophecy?' Close

Emperor Corrino might be the most tragic character of Season 1, and his discovery that the Sisterhood's control over his life spanned back to his conception was devastating. He had to face the reality that everything he thought he had achieved was because someone else set him up to achieve it, and the same was true of his failures. Nothing was his own, and then he discovered that the woman he was truly in love with was also a part of the scheming that led him to meet his fate.

He confronts Sister Francesca (Tabu), his lover, after Valya gives her orders to kill him with a poisoned weapon. She's reluctant to kill him and tries to explain where her plans deviate from Valyas, but Corrino's distrust drives him to pull a blade against Francesca. She reveals that the imprint won't allow him to kill her, and instead, Corrino drives the blade into his chest, making his death his own. Whether this is how Valya wanted his death to play remains to be seen, but she got the result she wanted. As Francesca holds Corrino as he lies dying, Empress Natalya (Jodhi May) comes up behind Francesca and kills her with the poisoned weapon.

With Ynez fleeing the planet, the big and important question is who will ascend the throne. Season 2 will see a Game of Thrones-type storyline with Natalya vying for the throne, that is until Constantine (Josh Hueston) learns about the death of his parents. Corrino appointed Constantine the commander of the Imperium's fleet, which sent him off-planet during the events that unfolded. Although his mother was absent for the majority of his childhood and his father failed to see his potential, Constantine loved his parents, and the news of their demise will not be taken lightly. It will be Constantine against Natalya and their followers against each other, creating instability in the Imperium, which never ends well within a monarchy.

Arrakis Holds the Answer for Desmond Hart in 'Dune: Prophecy' Close

All roads lead back to Arrakis, and Dune: Prophecy Season 2 will show Valya seeking answers behind Desmond's powers. During their confrontation, Valya sees what Desmond endured during his time on the spice planet and the sandworm that set his fate in motion.

She also sees him undergoing a procedure that replaces one of his eyes with a Thinking Machine with the intent of spreading the Ominous Plague, which is triggered by fear, but she can't distinguish a face. She knows that she'll find answers in Arrakis, and Ynez and Keiran are tagging along. Season 2 will unmask this mystery figure and will see Valya in search of an antidote to neutralize the plague and stop Desmond Hart from sabotaging the Sisterhood's plans.
