Volunteers spread Christmas cheer in Green Bay with meals and gifts for hundreds

GREEN BAY (WLUK) -- Northeast Wisconsin was treated to a White Christmas this year, while many families in the Green Bay area were also treated to a hot meal, thanks to the incredible generosity of others.

It was a festive and busy atmosphere at Spring Lake Church in Downtown Green Bay as volunteers spent their Christmas getting meals ready for a good cause.

"There are a lot of people who will be alone this Christmas," Four Winds Ministries of Wisconsin co-founder and Christmas Dinner coordinator Denise McFarlin said.

Four Winds Ministries of Wisconsin leads the volunteer operation, getting meals prepared and delivered to about 750 people. The meals go to older adults, people with disabilities, and struggling families. Each year, the volunteers have big shoes to fill.

"One of the things we learned is that the ADRC, who organizes 'Meals on Wheels,' they do not run on Christmas day, so we're kind of standing in the gap for them," McFarlin said.

Not only did folks get a hot meal, but they were also surprised with presents and notes of encouragement. The donor supported program, now in its 16th year, started as an in-person meal for around 100 people. The service continues to grow year after year.

While these volunteers are prepared the food, others are got the meals ready for delivery to help spreading Christmas cheer to those who need it most.

"Great Christmas tradition. We love it, we look forward to it every year, the kids look forward to it, so a lot of fun," volunteer Aaron Faulkner said.

Faulkner and his family have been volunteering for four years now. He said it's important to spread joy on a holiday where many my feel loss and sorrow.

"There's people that have lost loved ones, maybe this is their first holiday without a loved one, maybe they don't have family in the area, so we just want them to feel loved," Faulkner said.

Volunteers delivered meals Wednesday night between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., ensuring everyone had a Merry Christmas.
