Towable trailers soon may be available at more Indiana retailers

Hoosiers interested in purchasing a non-motorized trailer that attaches to their vehicle for property hauling purposes soon may have more places to shop.

The Indiana Senate voted 49-0 Monday in favor of legislation that would remove trailers from the state's definition of motor vehicles and eliminate the need for some trailer retailers to obtain a distributor's license from the secretary of state's office.

State Sen. Dan Dernulc, R-Highland, the sponsor of Senate Bill 73, said if the proposal becomes law it could make trailers available for purchase at big box home improvement stores, instead of just specialized trailer dealers.

"These utility trailers should not be considered motor vehicles as they have to be towed behind a motor vehicle to apply their intended function of transporting additional material," Dernulc said.

"Being under this definition has made the sale of these trailers difficult, and I am looking to make them more accessible to those who want to sell them in Indiana."

The proposal next goes to the House.
