Nov. 15 -- GOSHEN -- Registration is open for "Count us in: Supporting school attendance for a brighter future" taking place at 9 a.m. this Tuesday. This is a free, virtual seminar by Oaklawn.
People can join to discuss the impact school attendance has on students' long-term success and how to support students, families and schools in building a better future through attendance. They'll explore the impact of absenteeism, the advantages of regular school participation, which students are at greater risk for attendance problems, and how schools and communities can collaborate within a multi-tiered framework to support strong attendance, and also learn about initiatives specific to Elkhart and St. Joseph counties within this framework.
Learning objectives include understanding the impact of school attendance on students' overall wellbeing, identify which students are at greater risk for school attendance problems and the most effective ways to determine appropriate interventions, and learning how schools and community partners can collaborate to promote school attendance and address attendance problems
Presenter Patricia A. Graczyk is a licensed clinical psychologist and school psychologist in the state of Illinois and an assistant professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Illinois Chicago. Her current research interests focus on the utilization of a school-based tiered framework of evidence-based practices to promote school attendance, decrease school attendance problems, and prevent and treat anxiety, depression, and trauma in children and youth. Graczyk is active nationally and internationally in promoting school attendance and addressing school attendance problems.
Presenter Anna Sawatzky is director of The SOURCE, Elkhart County's system of care, a leader in Elkhart's "Be Present, Be Your Future Today" school attendance campaign.
Angie Skwarcan is prevention coordinator for The CASIE Center overseeing the Truancy Prevention Program that works with schools and families to remove barriers to attendance. This seminar is free, but registration is required.
