On Sunday night the Cincinnati Bengals fell into a 27-6 hole against the Los Angeles Chargers early in the third quarter before mounting a furious comeback.
The Bengals eventually tied the game at 27 thanks to the impressive play of quarterback Joe Burrow, who finished the game with 356 yards and three touchdowns. Unfortunately, the comeback bid was dashed with a 29-yard touchdown run from Chargers running back J.K. Dobbins with just 18 seconds left on the clock.
After the game, Burrow and his teammates were understandably dejected. "I just think it was a tough loss. The first half didn't go our way. We fought back, had our opportunities to seal the deal, and we didn't," Burrow said.
"...Just got to make the plays. And we haven't down the stretch. We're not a good enough team to ... our margin of error is slim. So we got to make those plays. I got to make those plays. We all got to make those plays."
Following the game, video showed a dejected Burrow heading back into the locker room with his head down and hands on his hips.
Head coach Zac Taylor said he felt "sick" about the way the Bengals have lost their last few games this season.
"This is sick the way that these games are ending and the way that we feel coming off the field every week," Taylor said. "The feeling I got when I got to talk to the team in the locker room after all these endings this year."
With the loss, Cincinnati moved to 4-7 on the season and now faces nearly impossible odds to make the playoffs. After missing the playoffs in 2023 and likely again in 2024, it's possible the Bengals decide to make a few changes.
