An 8-year-old Racine County boy is getting ready for the fight of his life, as doctors recently determined he will need a kidney transplant. Theo Scott was born with an ureteropelvic junction obstruction and renal disease. He had surgery at just three-months-old to help him keep his kidneys, but now doctors said his condition is declining, according to Theo's family,"The doctor said if we don't correct it, he could pass away. And that was heartbreaking to hear," said Danielle Scott, Theo's mother. The surgery gave Theo more time to live a somewhat normal life, growing up and playing with his older brother, Luke. Through it all, however, the little boy attended regular doctors appointments at Children's Wisconsin every few months to keep track on his illness. Theo will need a transplant. Right now, his parents said he has one kidney still functioning at about 35-percent.The illness isn't evident in Theo's day-to-day life, his parents said. Theo, currently in 2nd grade, is still energetic and positive. He wants to be a professional football player one day. Thinking about the inevitable, though, is difficult for Theo's father."It gets hard as a parent because there's nothing you can do for your kid and you're just so helpless. You know, as a dad, as a father... I'm just I'm stuck," Theo's father, Eric Scott said. The Scott family doesn't know exactly when the transplant will happen, but they are hoping Theo's father will be a match for donation."I'd give my life for him," Eric Scott said. After the surgery, the family will focus on Theo's recovery. They will be staring down tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills, and medication that Theo will have to pay for into adulthood."This is his life struggle that he's going to need help with for the rest of his life," Eric Scott said.Theo's family is fundraising for medical bills through the Children's Organ Transplant Association. Anyone interested in donating can follow this link. The family also has a fundraiser at Chipotle in Racine scheduled for November 23, where a portion of all proceeds will go to Theo's family.
