BAKERSFIELD, Calif KBAK/KBFX -- On Sunday, Kern County residents and travelers going to and from the Grapevine were on Winter watch as the first blizzard rolled in.
Eyewitness News went to the Grapevine Sunday afternoon to see how the conditions were. At the time, the Grapevine remained open. Travelers made a pit stop in Gorman to play in the snow, before getting back on the road.
"We did not know it was going to be snowing today," said San Francisco resident, Milca Mejia. "Like at all, by this area, specifically by this area."
Milca Mejia and her family were coming back from LA heading back home to San Francisco but couldn't help to stop by to see the snow.
"Yeah, we just wanted to enjoy the time in the snow because we have a couple people with me that had to see snow," said Mejia. "Me, personally, I've seen the snow, but it's fun just playing and tossing around in the snow."
The Gutierrez family was also driving through the Grapevine back home to Salinas and they just had to witness this since it doesn't snow there.
"I think it's super amazing," said Laritza Gutierrez. "We don't have snow like this in Salinas. So, the fact that I get to see this just coming back, we have to, we just have to stop by and just take a look at the snow."
For Kierra and her friends, playing in the snow was a small distraction from what is going on back in Altadena after her house burned down.
"Literally, a different sighting from the last three weeks that I've seen," said Kierra. "Just from seeing what looks like a freaking war zone in Altadena, it's a little tiny joy that I feel right in the moment you know just being able to kick around the snowball. Throw it at him or anything like, it just made me happy for a second."
Kierra says that she was only staying in Bakersfield for a few hours before having to turn back around to go back to LA. She says she has work tomorrow. With the storm brewing, she may have to stay back.
"I don't think we'll be coming back tonight," said Kierra. "But if it doesn't get too bad, maybe we try to, but I got work in the morning, so yeah, we'll see."
