Wiener Ski returns to Up North vineyard with wine, brats, cheese and skis

SUTTONS BAY, MI - Ready for a fun and tasty combination that mixes outdoor adventure with some delicious bites and sips? A few of our favorite places are teaming up for this winter's Wiener Ski event on Saturday, Feb. 1 at Shady Lane Cellars near Suttons Bay.

It will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the winery's tasting room, 9580 E. Shady Lane Road.

"Deep snow, wintry temperatures and warm fire pits are ready to welcome visitors," event organizers said. "It's the perfect chance for guests to embrace the outdoors and explore two freshly-groomed trails that are easily accessed from the tasting room."

The event is free and open to the public. Wine and food can be purchased on site.

Here's what to expect:

First, the fresh-air activity: Guests can choose from two groomed trail options that run through the Shady Lane Cellars vineyard property.

Option #1: Hike or cross-country ski: Shady Lane has a 5K loop trail designed for cross-country skiers to take in the pretty Leelanau County views. Winter hikers can also walk alongside the ski trail.

Option #2: Want to snowshoe? Shady Lane has a 1.5K trail for that.

Shady Lane also runs alongside the TART system's lovely Leelanau Trail, which stretches from downtown Traverse City to downtown Suttons Bay. Just in case you really want to stretch your legs.

Need skis or snowshoes? If you can't bring your own gear, you can rent equipment in advance from Suttons Bay Bikes. Rentals arranged in advance will be available for pick up at 1 p.m. and must be returned by 5 p.m. - all onsite at Shady Lane Cellars.

Click here to rent skis or snowshoes in advance. Cost is $25-$30.

Now the Sips and Bites: Wiener Ski is a collaboration between Shady Lane, the nearby Suttons Bay Bikes and the cheese masters at the Leelanau Cheese Company.

"From noon to 3 p.m., Nik Basford of Leelanau Cheese company will be on site with a winter warm-up of beer brats on a pretzel bun with sauerkraut, whole grain mustard and topped with melted raclette for $12 each," organizers said.

Shady Lane will have mulled wine for $10, hot chocolate for $5 and s'mores kits for $5. Winery staff will also be available to set up wine tastings and for wine by the bottle purchases.

Live music - a mix of blues, soul and folk - will play from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
